Khalil Munir talks with DVFriends Associate Head of School and Academic Dean David Calamaro on the start of his artistic and educational journey when he was 11 years old in South Philadelphia.

Greetings, friends I'm here with Khalil Munir. Colleague I've known for over 20 years, who is an educator here at DVFriends, an artist, and someone that I'd just been privileged to know we're going to talk a little about his journey through growing up and attending DV. What I know about your life as an artist and as an educator I feel like what you do right now is just like a manifestation of of your life growing up.

And that started in South Philadelphia and so I wonder if you could talk a little about what it was like for you growing up in South Philly.

I didn't start in South Philadelphia. I had multiple trips along the way but what I got to my mother when I was 11 years old so before then I had multiple stops with my aunt and my grandmother and my sisters grandmother and when I was 11 I finally got to my mother so growing up in south Philadelphia, its so funny because I was just having a conversation with one of my childhood friends and you said you couldn't tell us that we weren't rich because we just had so much fun as children we made up our own games some some things we shouldn't have done we kind of recall the time I'm where there was a arcade on 17th and Annin and we would take nickles and we would take a hammer and will bang out the nickles until they were size of quarters so we can actual play video games at the arcades. We played great basketball we play Manhunt. But there was also a side where we didn't have hot water or I will be wearing clothes for about a week at a time. The same clothes. So being in poverty, as a child I didn't know I was impoverished because there was so much love around me
