so earlier you mentioned ADHD and I'm wondering if you can see that the relationship between ADHD and executive functioning this is a really big question we get all the time because I is sort of as soon as as soon as the man challenges with executive function time management organization of materials initiating completing homework often times people will say I must be 88 so the fact of the matter is if you have ADHD you absolutely are going to have executive function based challenges because ADHD is going to impact your working memory in ADHD is getting packed your concentration and ability to and within a volume of concentration and ignore distractions and that's what you need to do to do executive function you have to be able to focus and manage your time and to ignore distractions and to be able to doubt that initiative over the course of time as your completing tasks and following routines doing homework excetera and the fact of the matter is we don't really actually have a diagnosis like executive dysfunction is a diagnosis stay in the DSM manual right so it's not like you can go and get a true diagnosis of executive function disorder although many many clinicians use that and will describe it that way but it is have any executive function challenge or impairment without having ADHD and so that tends to be the biggest difference not always but most typically I see that students that have executive function based in pyramids where they do now I had ADHD typically they're processing is involved now. I can either present as slow processing speed and actually can't even presented the opposite which is really fast processing speed and so sometimes what we see is that kids can be at a but it takes them a long time for information to kind of come in for them to work that information around and then to produce a response or similarly students have information it comes in and they're processing it so quickly that they have so many other thoughts and ideas but then they get distracted but it's not a primary attention Bass Challenge it can be very hard to tease out the two and generally you need to have a neuropsychological evaluation to do that but if you do have it new diagnosis of inattention based disorder it is highly likely that you're going to have executive function based challenges and so I think it is important to have that information because it certainly at least for myself is being an executive function coach it's going to help made my choice of tools and strategies that I'm going to give in and used to work with that student a lot of our students that have attention bass challenges we really want to be showing them strategies for managing their environment to minimize distractions give them as many tools as we can to help them see and sense the passage of time so that they are really aware of how much time do I have and have I been using that time wisely and if not how do I control for some of those things that are stealing my time we love to call those our time robbers and I think it's really important to give those students as many tools as possible to know the process of how to organize their space in materials so I think it's easy to say we can okay we're going to use your desk but I have a lot of kids that they really don't know how to do that and so we have to teach them through the process to do that so we get the tools and give the strategies and try to maximize the attention but then they can focus and carry out and attendance were to break down and sequence and planned approach to tasks
