Sarah Ward (MS, CCC/SLP) talks with DVFriends Associate Head of School and Academic Dean David Calamaro on how parents, teachers, and students can partner together to make sure the executive function challenges are met.

experience of being saying a parent-teacher conference and teacher expressed concern about the student executive function difficulties but in a way that kind of puts those difficulties back onto the student sort of like he just works a little bit harder and starting for a parent and leave a parent wondering why what do I do about that I'm wondering if you could help any help our parents with that scenario it's a tricky one so I think a couple things one is is executive function is something we all do so this is not sort of like a unique skill to one particular individual or another so it's definitely something that we can teach as teachers and I think it's really a great opportunity for parents to partner with teachers and teachers partner students and I am a huge fan of Ross Green who specializes in something called collaborative problem-solving with kids who have kind of some emotional dysregulation one of his famous phrase has his kids do well if they can and I think that's true I think it's DeWalt again I think parents do Wells again and I think teachers do well if they can and the reason why I say that is is that I've never really met a student who didn't want to do homework and get credit for it I think if kids would turn their homework in if they it's not intentional to not turn homework in it's not intentional necessarily to not want to complete something and to procrastinate and feel the stress in the urgency of not having kids do procrastinate Weaver Crossing is adult but it doesn't mean it necessarily feels good so I think the one thing is is to sort of partner back with a parent and with a teacher and a is the parent being able to say okay I am here the things that I can do I can really support reviewing what the homework is I can support going online in Google classroom and seeing what's posted there I can support the student in putting the homework back into the folder but no the student has executive function challenges and may not read the room to see everyone else is handing it in or the student may not recognize and no particularly where it's going to go that day so for example I have one student on my caseload she said it's to the high school and she said it's so frustrating she said because every time I go into a classroom there's a different process for turning in homework you know one teacher will say Okay goes in for what class. It is like. 4X depending because they were rotating schedule one day and that class that she might be. Too and not. For so it's very confusing of winded that homework actually get turned in and where should it go so I think the thing is is that if you as the parent I'm sure what you're willing to do and then to inquire with the teacher and say is it something that you could say to the students all right everyone's turning in homework could you do that gentle reminder could you check in with them and say homework and be handed in here or this is the time that I'm going to ask for it and to really just make sure even with submitting homework to being able to say did you submit it because sometimes kids do the work in the new forget to hit the click and actually it submitted and I'm finding more and more than we're moving away from paper and it is more digital anyway so that's a bit of a challenge but I think that if teachers as well and parents can ask for that there are maybe times if it's once a week once a month even where there's an opportunity in class for the students to go through their backpacks to go through their papers have the support of the teacher in knowing what do I need to keep what am I okay to throw out what should I do Oregon Heading For an upcoming exam those kinds of things and then I think the other thing is is for the teachers to be checking in with the students and it's fine to say can you check in with them and see if they have all the materials that they need to be bringing home it's easy as I appreciate that because you can always say I can't tell the teacher with her job is or what to do but I think partnering and sort of owning these are these are the steps that I can take what can you be doing when he's under your watchful eye when he's in the classroom as well but I also really strongly believe on I think teachers are eager to learn in to try a new strategies and I think often times teachers are sometimes frustrated because the typical things that we do for kids stay with a t h you know for kids who aren't showing these challenges don't always work and so I find sometimes that teachers are eager for new and different strategies so I would also say is apparent don't be afraid to share something that you read or seen online and say hey saw this thing that was really interesting wondering if that's something that we could try with my student and to share what's been helpful at home so if you've been chatting on a clock at home and that's really helped your student an issue where to complete a chore follow a routine within expected time parameters staying and partnering with the teacher and saying wow this is what I'm finding is really helpful at home is that something that we could try it school or being able to say I'm finding it home if I just really get him started on the work and he begins have a little confidence and knowing he can do that is that something that we can be doing on in class assignments at school I think that's a good way to is secretive and share your own experiences to the teacher can benefit from that as well
