Meet Smith, 5th Grade

Meet Smith, 5th grade
When did you come to DVFriends?

This is my first year at DVFriends. I came from a public elementary school.

Can you tell us a little bit about your learning difference(s)?

I have ADHD and trouble listening or following directions.

What were some of the biggest changes you experienced after coming to DVFriends?

Here there are a lot more activities and different ways of learning. We have different specials, fewer people in the class, and the schedules are different. All of these changes have been helpful.

Are there any strategies you’ve learned at DVFriends that have particularly helped you academically?

The arts and crafts. I like the hands-on learning instead of straight up tests. An example is how we’re learning about Chinese New Year. We watched videos, then made hats and dragon masks. I really like making things in the Makerspace. It’s my favorite special.

Are you involved in any extracurricular experiences?

I like origami and playing with paper,  and I do baseball once in a while. At my old school I had a lot of homework that made it hard to do those things after school. I like the clubs in school. I’m in the Makerspace club now. Earlier in the year I was in stuffed animal and movie club.

How has DV supported your growth as a person?

I’m more confident, happier, and more comfortable being at DVFriends – and more excited for school.

What's the best part about being at DVFriends?

World of Discovery class because we learn about a bunch of different things like Chinese New Year, Cinco de Mayo, and next we will learn about science.
