Irene McHenry Fund

The Irene McHenry Fund at DVFriends honors Irene's legacy as the school's founding Head of School, devoted educator, and mentor. Held in perpetuity as an endowment, the fund will support the annual Senior Class Retreat, giving every graduating student the opportunity to reflect in nature, strengthen friendships, and prepare for leadership beyond DV.

When Irene McHenry (1946–2026) became the first Head of School at Delaware Valley Friends in 1986, she believed students with learning differences deserved to be understood and celebrated. She cultivated a community grounded in respect and self-advocacy.

At Friends Council on Education, she mentored generations of Quaker school leaders and founded the Leadership Institute in Friends Schools. A gifted writer and speaker, she encouraged educators to lead with reflection, courage, and purpose, especially in uncertain times.

Irene was calm in a storm, quietly determined once she set her mind to something, and endlessly curious about education, psychology, nature, spirituality, and the ways people grow. She listened deeply, asked thoughtful questions, and helped others recognize strengths in themselves.
