The arts have always been a strong element in our academic program at DVFriends.

BREADTH
Our students explore drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, and ceramics. They learn music theory and instrumental and vocal skills. They learn movement, dance, and improvisational acting games. They learn to compose and capture stories through photography. They take part in an excellent culinary arts program. And they pursue extracurricular options ranging from our annual original musical to DV Rock Band, Drum Line, and more.  You can see student artwork in the photos and galleries linked below. QUALITY
DVFriends has sent many graduates on to top art and culinary schools—and to successful creative careers, whether as fine artists, graphic designers, musicians, chefs, or teachers. All of our art teachers are professional artists in their disciplines.

PURPOSE
We use the process of art-making to teach creative problem solving and to prepare students to meet academic and life challenges. Both engaging and fun, the arts program balances the academic experience, offering the chance to develop other forms of talent and intelligence.

PROGRAM
Lower School students have art, music, movement, and time in our Makerspace as part of their Specials rotation. Middle School students enjoy a quarterly arts rotation, sampling different artistic disciplines such as drawing and painting, ceramics, music, and movement throughout the school year. Upper School students can choose from a range of arts electives each trimester including but not limited to:

  • Drawing & Painting
  • Culinary Arts
  • Sculpture & Ceramics
  • Music
  • Theater & movement
  • Photography

Studio Arts is offered to students planning to study the arts in college. The faculty works closely with each student to prepare a comprehensive portfolio.

Each spring, a school-wide Arts Festival showcases the many talents of our students. Below are some examples of student work.
