Service Learning

Serving others is a central tenet to Quaker philosophy and a key component of a DVFriends education. Our service-learning program provides opportunities for students to reach out – both within our own community and particularly beyond our walls – to help others in need.

Upper school students are required to complete a total of 40 hours of community service between 9th and 12th grade as a graduation requirement. In the fall, all Upper school students participate in a Day of Service, and then there are several school-sponsored opportunities throughout the school year in which students may volunteer to serve our community. Students will need to fulfill their remaining hours on their own time independently with organizations of their choice. All hours must be submitted for approval via the MobileServe app.

Students across all divisions participate in service. Some annual examples include a blood drive for the American Red Cross, a clothing drive, and a Thanksgiving food drive. In addition, there are many needs that arise where DVFriends students lend a helping hand such as making pierogies as a fundraiser for Ukraine, making sandwiches for local food pantries, and spending time with residents of a local nursing home throughout the school year.

Middle and lower schools may also undertake division-specific service projects during the year.
